And The Lessons of the Story are…???

Bonaire Fence

I am an early riser.  Everyday I am up between 5-5:30 and in the yard shortly thereafter.  By being an early riser I can do 1-2 hours of gardening before the heat becomes overwhelming.

I have some companions who are on the same schedule.  I don’t know their names or even what they look like.  Sometimes they return my waves of greeting and sometimes they do not.  They are a group of local fisherman.  Everyday, 7 days a week they are fishing by our house about 100-300 meters off shore.  They arrive by 6:15 and often stay till dark.

They showed up about 5 months ago so I have had a lot of time to observe them.  In the beginning they had a “spot”.  They stayed in the spot all day.  The only time they moved was to occasionally change shifts.  They would come ashore and change places with a new crew.  It did not make a difference who was in the crew they went to their spot.

Anna and I would watch them catch fish.  They caught a lot of fish.  The first weeks it was very apparent they really had a great fishing hole.  They obviously also had the right bait to attract the fish and there were a lot of fish to attract.

If you made a comparison to real estate, the fishermen were in a hot market, a very hot market.  They could do no wrong.

After a few weeks their fishing pattern changed.  They always started out at the spot.  Often they stayed there for 7 or 8 hours at a stretch before moving 100-200 meters away.  We could see they still caught fish but never with the ease of their original efforts.  We could also see the fish were getting smaller.

After another few weeks their fishing pattern changed again.  As always they began at the spot.  Sometimes they stayed there for 5 or 6 hours before moving on.  They moved further and further away often as much as 1,000 meters away.  Though they kept on moving they did not keep on catching fish.

In the last month the change has been more rapid and the results have gotten worse and worse.  They stay at the spot for perhaps an hour.  They move frequently there after.  The go further out toward Klein and further along our coast.  They cover 10-15,000 square meters.  They are not catching many fish.

This morning they did not even start at the spot though they were only 2-300 meters away.  All of a sudden we and the fishermen saw large splashes as jacks ripped into a school of baitfish.  The action was 250 meters at sea.  The fishermen hauled in their lines, fired up the engine, made a sharp turn and were off to chase the fish.

Of course the jacks were off chasing the bait- fish.  For a few chaotic minutes the fishermen raced about searching every which way.  All the searching was to no avail.  If they headed east the fish jumped to the north.  When they headed north, the fish headed west and so it went.

After 10 minutes the jacks stopped jumping and the fishermen sat bewildered.  Soon they returned to their familiar haunts.  They continued their pattern.  Fish here for a bit without catching and move on.  Over and over they repeated the pattern.  Fish without catching and move on.  This afternoon they made a big change.  They gave up and left the area.  They are out of sight and visibility is over 5 miles!

I see many lessons in this true story.  There are lessons about fishing, lessons about real estate and lessons about life.  When you look closely you see that all the lessons are the same.

What are the lessons you see?

What are the connections and patterns that you see?

What actions will you take to have your success?

We are so excited about our soon to be made big announcement.  The initial results are drawing rave reviews from our focus group.  Be alert for the big announcement.

Monday is Labor Day in America and it is also a big holiday here, Bonaire Day.  In honor of Bonaire Day all non- tourist oriented businesses will be closed.
